[Fanfiction] Kingdom Hearts: The Tale of Three Empty

Chapter 1:
The touch of darkness, Insrim could feel its emptyness consuming his body. He couldn't move his legs, they had already been devoured by the thick black nothingness that rose from the ground.
He called out in terror, hoping that the devistation and loss he could see wasn't all that was left of his home town of Katarin. It devoured his waist now and whisps of shadows wrapped around his arms and neck. He saw no escape and the more hope faded the quicker the shadows consumed.
"Are you really giving up?" It was a childs voice, a girl. But Insrim could see no one.
"Who are you? Where are you? Run while you can!" He replied to the voice, assuming someone had wandered into the mess. "If you can..." He whispered finally after realising the person might be as hopelessly trapped as he was.
"You hold within you a bright light." The voice continued. Insrim was covered in the dark now, even if he could see the girl before, now all he saw were shadows. "Here, let me help."
Insrim could not hear the girl after that if she even spoke, the shadows had consumed all of him and he was standing in their depths. He saw nothing, nothing but complete and total darkness.
But something glimmered, a spec of light before his eyes that seemed to give him a little strength. It began to radiate outwards, bringing about a blinding light that caused Insrim to cover his eyes.

When Insrim awoke his head hurt, he felt terrible, like his whole body was still asleep. He sat up and just sat there while the dizzyness passed from his mind. He did nothing to look at his surroundings and only when he finally moved his arms did he realise he was holding something and had been the whole time he was sitting there.
It was a solid metal object, however it was not conventional. It looked to be a key but it was far larger then any key Insrim had heard of and he was holding it by a handle in the base of it. A yellow guard squared around the handle and a silver key head stuck out from the guard.
Upon seeing the object Insrim immediatly dropped it, clambering back from it in his sudden shock of seeing it. He clambered back until he was sitting up against the wall a short distance from the object, what in the world was it?
Again Insrim sat unmoving, this time staring at the key lying on the ground before him. What was it? Why had he been holding it? And what exactly had happened? He remembered his years in his town, all up to the day of the incident, then darkness. He remembered sinking into a vast darkness...And a voice. He had definatly heard a voice. Had it saved him and brought him here.
"Is this...Is this a place beyond our town." He slowly got to his feet, looking around so that he could figure out just where he was. "Where am I?"
There was no responce, there was no one around. It seemed like he was he was in some kind of back alley or something, but it looked too clean and tidy for a back alley. Slowly but surely he stepped over to the strange key like object on the ground, then he thought of something. He looked around, searching for a person, more precisely the girl who had gotten him away from the dark. But there was no point in looking, there was no one around.
Finally he turned his attention back to the key, it was just a piece of metal, maybe someones idea of a joke or a prank. It was harmless.
He leant over to get a better reach to grab the key when it suddenly vanished in a sparkle of light, then just as quickly as it vanished it appeared in his reaching hand. "Aaaah!" He yelped, dropping the key on the ground again. It dropped, clanging on the stone ground a few times before falling to rest.
Insrim was now back against the wall, but standing this time and heart pounding with the shock of the keys sudden appearance in his hand. What the hell was that thing? Insrim had never seen anything that could dissappear and reappear before, it was like some kind of magic he'd only heard of in fairytales.
Cursed, thats what he thought, a cursed object that he should stay away from.
Insrim turned from it, running down the allyway in hopes of finding a way out of there or someone to tell him where here was.
Suddenly the pathway widened out to an open space, he'd found the main streets of the city. There were people sure enough and buildings everywhere, just as clean and looked after as the alley had been. This place was so clear it was a big contrast to the town Insrim lived in.
The plants and flowers were neatly arranged, a large tree covered over a patch of green grass and a river ran through the middle of the clearing and down one of the streets. It was like heaven...Wait, had he died? The thought suddenly jumped into his head, the magic key, the cleanliness, the pure and peaceful looking city. He was dead wasn't he?
As if called by his thoughts something whizzed by, at first Insrim wasn't sure what it was, a rocket, a robot or maybe even a tray of some sort. But when it flew a little while away Insrim could see there was a kid riding on it, and there was more then one of them. Little high tech surfboards or something that seemed to fly. His thoughts were now far from the last one of being dead, such a thing would seem silly now.
By the looks of it those flying boards were a normal thing around here as the other folk went on with their lives unconserned, it would be difficult to catch up with the boarders and who knew if they would even be friendly, however the city folk around now seemed nice enough.
"Excuse me." He asked a man who seemed in his 40s. "Can you tell me where I am? What this city is called?"
"You don't know kid?" The man replied, stacking watermelons on a wooden rack. "I don't know how you could get so deep into the heart of Ermbeck without knowing where you are."
Insrim decided not to disturb the man further, at least now he knew where he was...Or at least what the city was called.
He had no idea what to do next, this place was a foreign land to him and he not the most confident or skilled of people. The whole thing seemed pointless. He walked over to the large tree and sat beneithe it, there was actually a nice relaxing atmosphere here.
He noticed a strange animal not too far from where he was, a deep black skinned creature with yellow eyes. Must've been a local animal or something. But there were two of them.
Wait two? Insrim had only seen one a moment ago. He decided to rub his eyes, he was seeing things. Huh? Now there was three of them and they were getting closer.
"What in the world are these-" Insrim saw it this time, shadows emerging from the ground and forming into those creatures.
Frightened for his life Insrim leaped to his feet and called out. "W-what are y-you? L-leave m-me alone!"

Chapter 2:
For a moment there he felt safe, the creatures simply melting into puddles, had they really done as he said. But no, the puddles approached. Once they were close enough Insrim could actually make them out as the shapes of the creatures crawling across the ground, the strangest part was that while they were like this the creatures had no form but a shadow on the ground.
While Insrim gawked at the unusual ability of the creatures, they began to surround him, cutting off all mean of escape and beginning to take on form again. One by one they began to rise from their shadows and take shape.
Everyone around had fled and taken shelter when the creatures showed up, there was no one to see Insrims plight. And he knew no one here so no one would notice him missing.
The nearest creature leaped at Insrim, scratching away at the air infront of itself with its whispy dark fingertips. Insrim could now clearly see the creatures shape and size, it was smaller then an average person, nearly childsized, and there were antenna sticking from its head as if it was an insect.
The only way Insrim could go was backwards, towards the tree and into the creatures' trap. But Insrim was off balance, he had been so suprized by the creatures sudden attack on him that he stumbled backwards, catching his foot on a root and tripping over backwards. He landed on his rump.
While Insrim tended to his falling injury, the net closed, the enemies came in close and once again one attacked by jumping with its claws scrapeing at the air. And in natural reaction Insrim put his arms up to block, he had put no thought into it, he was just desperately trying to protect himself but to no avail.
But nothing happened, the creature never reached his arms and Insrim had closed his eyes so did not know what had just transpired. He feared to open them, took at what might be, the creatures had him surrounded. Knew if he took a look they would kill him.
Ofcourse what he 'knew' was childish, the reaction of a child thinking the boogy man wouldn't take him away if he did not see it. But still nothing happened, curiosity began to take over for fear and he waredly began to open his panic stained eyes. As he moved he shuddered, the thought of what could happen if he looked caused him to close his eyes twice more before fully opening them.
They were just standing there watching him, all of the creatures were, it was just as he feared. They must've been waiting for him to open his eyes, to enjoy the kill. He couldn;t close his eyes for a moment, the panic of false realisation combined with the natural curiosity of the human mind kept them open for a few seconds before he snapped them shut and moved his arms to hold himself closer together out of fear.
Something brushed his knee, they were there weren't they, they had seen his fear and decided to attack. Wait a second. Insrim thought for a second, the object that brushed his leg didn't seem organic, more metalic. And now that he thought about it, there was something heavy in his right hand.
The realisation snapped Insrims eyes open, the key shaped object. That must've been it, but didn't he leave it in the allyway?
No, sure enough it was there in his hand, the big metal key shaped object. But this time he noticed something extra he hadn't noticed in the ally. There was a chain attached to the yellow guard opposite the key head.
It didn't take long for his curiosity to waver, his thoughts of the object rung true in his mind. A cursed object that brough these creatures to him. He knew it to be true, as long as he held onto the key he'd be cursed with these creatures attacking him. What else could the reason be? He'd never even encountered such creatures before.
Insrim threw the key on the ground, there was no clanging sound this time, just little thumps from the object hitting the dirt and the key head bouncing off the root Insrim had tripped over not too long ago.
"Go away! I don't have the cursed object anymore. Leave me alone." He felt courage welling up inside him, they only wanted the key after all, and they could have it. Insrim wasn't after a cursed object like that anyway.
The creatures still waited, as if keeping their distance, it took them a few seconds to figure out Insrim was unarmed and they began moving towards him.
All of his courage faded in that moment as he began to realise they were after him, not the key. "N-no, leave me alone!" He yelled, shuffling backwards on his hands and feet, trying to get away. But there was no escape, they had him surrounded, and slowly but surely they closed in until right up close to him.
This looked familiar, total darkness from which there is no escape. He began to see images, things he remembered from his past. On it there was a child who smiled and said. "Hey! I found a strange door in the mountains, lets open it okay?"
He remembered his life in the village, it had been so nice and peaceful. He missed it and wanted it back, so he began to cry, tears running down his cheeks and dropping into the dark. Not that he could see them.
"You want to go back?" A voice asked him, it was a deep voice, clearly that of a mans. "You can never go back, only the shadows exist there now."
Suddenly a light cut through the darkness, it was in a horizontal line and seemed to be a gap in what seemed like solid darkness. The darkness then began to dissipate around him, he was baffled.
He was back under the tree, the creatures had backed off...No they were fewer in number and now an unusually dressed man stood defending Insrim.
"You there, are you alright?" Asked the man. "Leave the Heartless to us, go find somewhere safe to hide."
Insrim didn't argue, he didn't even know what was going on, the best thing he could do now is do as he was told and find a safe place to hide. But where was a safe place to hide from creatures that popped up all over the place?
Something suddenly zoomed past, it was one of those flying surfboards from before. There was another of those strangely dressed people on it, infact they seemed to be everywhere. Just who were they?
The man was starting to get annoyed, still fighting off the creatures that came near.
"Go now!" He said.
Insrims attention snapped back to the man, and then he noticed it. In the mans hand was a large key, and he was using it like a weapon to fight of those creatures. Those creatures? The man had called them 'Heartless', as in Heartless Monsters? Why not just say monsters then?
There were too many questions in Insrims mind, he had to shake them off, and to do so he shook his head. Not that it got rid of the thoughts but it made him feel better, which in turn made him consentrate better. He had to get out of here, and he would too.

Insrim ran. He ran as fast and as far as he could down the street with the river running through it, the dark creatures appearing behind him as he ran, forming as if from the ground. And as they formed those strangely dressed people from before would jump out and start fighting with them.
This whole place was crazy, Insrim just wanted to go home, home to his family and friends, home to his peaceful and uneventful life. As he remembered his home he began to slow his run, several steps later and he remembered the darkness that had spread across his world. It had taken everyone he knew and loved...It had taken his whole life.
Insrim stopped, tears forming in his eyes as he thought about his home, a place that was now gone. He had friends, family and a peaceful life...All of which was now gone.
As Insrim cried, the creatures began appearing and taking form around him, some were as before but others wore armor. The armored ones were dressed like knights, little knights, however their hands had claws and the armor didn't cover their torsos.
Insrim wiped tears from his eyes, he felt like crying again, but he tried hard not to. He could cry later if he survived. However survival seemed far from grasp, those creatures surrounding him had him closed in. And he with no way of fighting them.
It was then he remembered, those people with the strange clothes, their weapons were those keys. And he had one, one of those keys, although it was different from theirs. His was a completely different colour and shape to theirs but it was his only choice, his only chance to survive.
The Heartless Monsters began to close in, if Insrim didn't do something soon they'd kill him sure enough. But what was he suppossed to do? He had left the key under the tree before that man showed up.
Some of the Heartless jumped at him, and it was then he remembered. He held his arm just past one of the Heartless' jump direction. "Here goes nothing." He said to the thin air, his only reason to say it was to voice his consern that nothing would happen.
But that was far from the truth. As expected the key he had held before, appeared in his hand in a flash of light, guarding the Heartless attack. Insrims eyes opened wide at this, he was suprised that it worked, but his suprise was cut short by a pain in his back. While he had guarded one attack he had forgotten there were another two still in motion from the back.
Insrim fell to the ground, he'd just been given a way to survive and it had been taken from him in the same instant. He dropped the key as he fell and lay without it with a pain in his back where he'd been hit. He expected to die then and there, there was no escape for him now.

Chapter 3:
Insrim could feel the darkness gathering overhead, there was no chance now. His body aching from pain, not just from his wounds but a pain that felt like a part of himself was being ripped out there and then. He could see nothing though, the darkness had consumed all of him.
And then a light cut through the darkness, the pain he felt immediatly stopped and he was able to rise to his feet. Insrim only now found out what had saved him. Two people weilding those keys had come to his aid and were now fighting off the Heartless creatures.
"Are you alright?" One of them said to him, after finishing off one of the weaker Heartless creatures.
"I..." Insrim was going to answer, but his mind wandered to the key he'd dropped on the ground. Without thinking he stepped over to it and picked it up by its handle. "I-I'm not alright...What in the world is going on?"
Luckily enough, the two had delt with the Heartless creatures that had been around while Insrim had been pre-occupied with the key, so now they had time to answer. "The cornerstone has been turned off so the Heartless are getting in, we will resolve this situation as quick as we can so don't worry, your world will be safe." Explained the one that had yet to speak.
"My world?" Insrim thought back to his town, to Katarin, the darkness had taken it, was it the same thing happening here? "What's a cornerstone? What does it do? Can it bring my town back?"
"It looks like he's not from this world." Said the first to the second.
"Yeah, maybe his world was taken by the Heartless." Replied the second.
The first one directed their attention back at Insrim, the two had armor on and a helmet of some kind so Insrim couldn't tell if they were male or female, but he had an idea due to their voices. "We'll explain later, right now we need to make this area sa-"
The first ones sentence was cut short when they noticed that Insrim was holding a key like their own. They seemed to stare until the second one noticed and spoke about it. "Hey! A keyblade, where did you get that?"
"Keyblade?" Insrim moved his arm so that the key he was holding was level with his own face. "Is that what this thing is called?" He replied. Insrim inspected the keyblade, still not entirely sure what it was, but he guessed it was the same as its name, a blade shaped like a key. Was that the reason for the handle?
The second one became patient, assuming Insrim was dodging the question and worried that more Heartless would show up while they were 'chatting'. "Where did you get that keyblade, kid?"
"I-I don't know...It just appeared when I first got here." Insrim replied, his confusion at the whole situation seemingly being misjudged by the two. However, he not long finished his sentence before Heartless began to appear behind the backs of the two inquirers, he noticed them immediately and his face dropped with fear.
The other two did not notice them though, and the second began again. "It just appeared?" He questioned, turning almost immediatly to his companion. "You think he's another chosen, like the rest of us."
"No time to talk about it." The first one suddenly spoke, they had seen Insrims fear and jumped to the right conclusion, turning around they engaged the Heartless. "Take him to the Master, I'll handle things here."
The second saluted the first before saying. "Yes maam." As a confirmation. They took hold of Insrims right arm, the one that held the keyblade, and motioned a direction to run. Almost immediatly after that same person engaged a Heartless that had appeared in that area.
Insrim had been thrown in the midst of confusion and as of yet he still knew nothing of what was going on here. What he did know though, was that he'd just been saved by that guy and girl and had been saved by another man before. Not only that he had a weapon to defend himself, a keyblade. Something he'd thought cursed before.
He decided to follow the guy, assisting in fighting off the Heartless where he could. As it turned out he was pretty lousy at it, he would swing wide and miss, toppling himself instead of the malicious creature so that he was the one that actually needed assisting. Their ability to sink into shadows on the ground really was annoying.

It was not long until the two came upon a single keyblade weilder trying to fight off surrounding Heartless to no avail. Whereas Insrim saw himself leaping over and slicing through Heartless after Heartless, he instead began running carelessly and tripped over a loose paving stone. However, the guy who had been leading insrim leaped into action. He leaped right over the river and into the fray where he cut down a number of Heartless.
Insrim got to his feet as fast as he could and dusted himself off, only to find himself now surrounded by Heartless. They were everywhere, he would imagine himself cutting them down if it hadn't been for the confidence knock he had just had. Instead he stood in what he tought to be a ready stance, with his keyblade in both hands for better grip and out infront of himself because that was where his arms could reach when both holding the same object. When he actually thought about it though, he really wouldn't beable to fight surrounding Heartless while holding the keyblade like this, his back was wide open. It might as well have had a bullseye on it.
Still, the Heartless did not attack. Some did however turn towards a more deadly foe, the guy leading Insrim had returned to help and had brought the help of the person he'd saved. "You're nothing but trouble." He yelled towards Insrim, and although Insrim thought the comment was hurtful, he had to agree. So far he'd just been saved time and time again, even now he had the same weapon as them he was pretty much useless.
The two defeated the Heartless horde with relative ease while Insrim just stood defensively, trying not to cause trouble. "Hi there, names Kitil. You must be new to the squad." The newcomer stated, trying to keep a friendly atmosphere if they were going to be fighting together.
"I'm-"
"He's a civilian, and we have no time for this. Lets keep moving." Before Insrim could start his reply the leader had spoken, Insrim and Kitil were forced to follow even while Kitil showed a suprised look from seeing a civilian weild a Keyblade.
They continued without a word, fighting Heartless as they went. Although pretty much useless in the fights Insrim was able to pick of just one Heartless, something he was very proud of doing despite the other twos higher kill rate. The hit had actually been a lucky hit, he had swung wide enough for the Heartless he was attacking to escape before he could hit it. But another Heartless had appeared after fleeing a hit from the leader of the group, so Insrims strike connected to it and defeated it.
At another point their group increased by another person who had also been fighting the Heartless by herself. "I'm Kathy." She said to Insrim, also mistaking him for a new recruit and immediatly after being told otherwise.
From there they met no one else until they reached a large group of Keyblade weilders. Kitil and Kathy were re-assigned together to replace a group that had been forced to retreat from taking too many hits. The whole city that had once been calm, now looked like a military battleground.
The other guy took Insrim to meet the Master, then was dismissed and left to return to the girl he'd been with before.
"I'm guessing your world fell to darkness." The Master said. "That would be why you were transported here, by your Keyblade no less." He explained.
Insrim nodded, it did make sense since he woke with Keyblade in hand. "What is going on? Why did my town fall to Darkness? Where am I? Who are you people?"
The Master turned towards an advisor, he nodded and the advisor went off on an errand. Then the Master turned back to insrim. "My name is Master Alterinos, however I am currently far too busy to answer anymore questions then that. There is a Gummi Ship leaving here for our world, board it and I will answer your questions when I return." He explained, and sure enough he was busy, his advisor returned and relayed some news. Insrim only caught a small part of it, something about the Cornerstone he had heard about before.
Insrim had half a mind to ask about the Cornerstone, and another half to ask what a Gummi Ship was. But he kept quiet, he questions wouldn't be answered anyway. Another of the advisors elected to guide Insrim to the Gummi Ship and his offer was accepted.
As Insrim headed for the Gummi Ship, following a man he didn't know, he noticed that there were people drawing things, strategies most likely, but some looked like blueprints to some strange object or device.
The Gummi Ship itself was pretty big, it was a passenger ship mostly comprised of injured people. Aside from the people guarding the exits and the person driving, Insrim was probably the least injured. A doctor roaming the ship took a quick look at the gashes on his back and claimed Insrim needed less help then other patients, then went to treat other people.
Injured or not, Insrim was confused and exhausted. His eyelids drooped at the sudden peace that seemed to envelop the whole ship as it flew out into space. A few moments later and he drifted off into a deep sleep.

Thanks, I went with the assumption that some people reading it wouldn't know a thing about Kingdom Hearts so I tried to avoid spoilers.
I'll post up chapter 2 once I type it.
